How Many Units of Botox Do I Need? Complete Guide by Area

June 2026

"How many units will I need?" is the most common question first-time Botox patients ask — and the answer is frustratingly specific to you. But this guide gives you realistic ranges for every treatment area so you can budget and set expectations before your appointment.

Botox Units by Treatment Area

Here's what most patients need at each area. Ranges account for differences in muscle strength, gender, and desired result.

What Determines How Many Units You Need?

1. Muscle Strength

The stronger the muscle, the more Botox it takes to relax it. Your injector will ask you to make expressions (frown, raise eyebrows, squint) to assess muscle strength. Someone who furrows their brow intensely all day will need more units than someone with fine, superficial lines.

2. Gender

Men typically have larger, denser facial muscles and need 1.5–2x more units than women for the same treatment area. This is especially true for the forehead and frown lines.

3. Desired Result

"Frozen" requires more units than "softened." Most patients at Rituel want a natural result — lines softened at rest, some movement preserved. This actually requires fewer units than a full freeze, and it looks better.

4. Treatment History

Regular Botox patients often need fewer units over time because the muscles gradually weaken from disuse. First-time patients may need slightly more to overcome strong, well-developed muscles.

5. Metabolism

People who exercise intensely or have naturally fast metabolisms may metabolize Botox faster. This doesn't usually change the number of units needed per session, but it can affect how frequently you need to return (every 10 weeks instead of 14, for example).

The "Start Low" Strategy

At Rituel, we recommend starting on the conservative end of the range, especially for first-timers. Here's why:

  • You can always add more — a touch-up at 2 weeks is easy and common
  • You can't take it away — if you get too much, you wait 3–4 months
  • You learn your response — everyone metabolizes Botox differently
  • Natural results — undertreating slightly looks better than overtreating

Dysport Units: A Different Scale

If you're considering Dysport instead of Botox, the unit counts are different. Dysport uses approximately 2.5–3x more units per area, but at $5/unit (half the price), the total cost is similar.

Example: Frown lines → 20 units Botox ($200) ≈ 50 units Dysport ($250). Learn more in our Botox vs Dysport comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many units of Botox do I need for my forehead?+

The average forehead requires 10–20 units of Botox. Women typically need 10–15 units, while men with stronger frontalis muscles often need 15–25 units. Your injector will assess your specific muscle strength.

Can I get fewer units to save money?+

Yes, and a good injector will work within your budget. Starting conservative is actually smart — you can always add more at your 2-week follow-up. Under-treating is easily fixable; over-treating means waiting 3–4 months.

Do I need the same number of units every time?+

Not necessarily. Over time, regular Botox patients often need fewer units as the muscles weaken from disuse. Your injector may also adjust based on how your body metabolizes the product.

Why do some people need more Botox than others?+

Muscle mass, metabolism, gender, and desired result all play a role. Men typically need 1.5–2x more units than women. Athletes and people with fast metabolisms may metabolize Botox faster and need higher doses or more frequent treatments.

What's the most I should get in one session?+

There's no hard maximum, but a full-face treatment rarely exceeds 60–80 units. If a provider suggests significantly more, get a second opinion. Overtreating leads to an unnatural, frozen look.
